Shohei Ohtani agreed to a record-breaking $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.

I was stunned—not that he went to the Dodgers, but the $700 million—despite the fact he can’t even pitch next year because of an injury.

I mean the next biggest contract is like $425 million. That’s 50 percent bigger.

Heading into the season I think he’d get maybe $500 million. Then by mid-season when it appeared he was well on his way to his 2nd straight MVP Award, $600 - $700 million seemed like a possibility.

But then he injured his arm, couldn’t pitch for the rest of the year—or next year—and it seemed we were back on track for $500 million.

So I can’t imagine what he would have got had he stayed healthy—$800 million?

Either way, the Dodgers got the best player in the game—but it cost them.
