Secretary of State Marco Rubio is meeting with Britain’s Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper in Washington today. The sit-down comes amid renewed tensions over the Chagos Islands and the joint US–UK air base on Diego Garcia.

President Donald Trump has criticized London’s decision to transfer sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius. The UK maintained a 99-year lease on Diego Garcia to preserve US operations. Trump this week called it strategically vital, particularly as he increases pressure on Iran over its nuclear program.

The State Department says it supports the Chagos agreement, but Britain must approve any military operations launched from the base.
