Treasure hunters struck gold off Florida's Atlantic shoreline, recovering more than 1,000 Spanish colonial coins with an estimated total value of around $1 million from a centuries-old shipwreck site.

The remarkable haul was pulled from waters along the state's famed "Treasure Coast" during the 2025 summer salvage season by Captain Levin Shavers and his crew aboard the M/V Just Right, according to 1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels LLC, which holds exclusive salvage rights to the historic wreck site.

The team discovered over 1,000 silver coins, known as Reales, along with five gold Escudos and other rare gold artifacts, the company announced in a press release dated Sept. 30.

The coins originated from Spanish colonial mints in Bolivia, Mexico, and Peru, with many still clearly showing dates and mint marks after spending centuries underwater.

"This discovery is not only about the treasure itself, but the stories it tells," said Sal Guttuso, the salvage company's director of operations. "Each coin is a piece of history, a tangible link to the people who lived, worked, and sailed during the Golden Age of the Spanish Empire. Finding 1,000 of them in a single recovery is both rare and extraordinary."

The find is the latest recovery from the 1715 Spanish Fleet disaster, when a hurricane devastated an entire flotilla returning to Spain with New World riches on July 31, 1715. The storm scattered what historians estimate was $400 million worth of gold, silver, and jewels across the ocean floor.

The condition of the recently discovered coins suggests they came from a single chest or cargo shipment that broke apart when the ship carrying it was destroyed in the hurricane.

The salvage team used specialized dive teams, multiple vessels, and underwater metal detecting devices to search the seafloor, according to federal permit documentation filed by the company. The team used hand-fanning sand and suction to uncover buried artifacts.

This coastal region, stretching from Melbourne to Fort Pierce, has yielded millions of dollars in 1715 Fleet coins over the decades.

Florida law designates all historic artifacts found on state lands or in state waters as state property, though licensed excavators may conduct authorized recovery operations.

Under current agreements, approximately 20 percent of recovered archaeological materials must be retained by Florida for research and public exhibition, Guttuso said in the press release. The salvage company prepares detailed inventories each season for state review, with officials selecting items for public collections through a federal court-approved process.

What remains is divided equally between the salvage company's ownership and its subcontractors.

"We want to do it right," Guttuso said. "And it benefits the people of Florida. They end up in the museums."

Last year, Florida officials said dozens of gold coins were recovered after they had been stolen from a wreck site by unauthorized salvagers. The suspect was identified as a family member of a team contracted by 1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels LLC.

The newly recovered coins will undergo conservation treatment before being put on display, with plans underway for museum exhibitions that will allow visitors to view the authentic treasures.

"Every find helps piece together the human story of the 1715 fleet," Guttuso said. "We are committed to preserving and studying these artifacts so future generations can appreciate their historical significance."
