Sophie Kinsella, a beloved British author best known for her best-selling "Shopaholic" book series, has died at the age of 55 following a years-long battle with brain cancer.

Kinsella, whose real name was Madeleine Wickham, died peacefully on Wednesday morning, her family <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DSFUBmeDKW7/?hl=en">announced</a> in a Dec. 10 Instagram post. They noted that her final days were "filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy."

"We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life," her family penned.

"Despite her illness, which she bore with unimaginable courage, Sophie counted herself truly blessed — to have such wonderful family and friends, and to have had the extraordinary success of her writing career. She took nothing for granted and was forever grateful for the love she received."

Kinsella was diagnosed with grade 4 glioblastoma in 2022 and subsequently underwent an eight-hour surgery to remove the aggressive, fast-growing brain tumor.

According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, glioblastoma is the most prevalent malignant form of brain cancer. Most people who are diagnosed with the disease—which is more common in men—are in their 60s.

Glioblastoma can be difficult to treat because the tumors grow quickly and are often resistant to conventional treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, the National Institutes of Health notes. The average <a href="https://www.thebraintumourcharity.org/brain-tumour-diagnosis-treatment/types-of-brain-tumour-adult/glioblastoma/glioblastoma-prognosis/#:~:text=The%20average%20glioblastoma%20survival%20time%20is%2012%2D18%20months%20%E2%80%93%20only%2025%25%20of%20patients%20survive%20more%20than%20one%20year%2C%20and%20only%205%25%20of%20patients%20survive%20more%20than%20five%20years.">survival rate</a> is between 12 and 18 months. Roughly 25 percent of people diagnosed with glioblastoma survive more than a year, and only about 5 percent live beyond five years.

In an April 2024 Instagram post announcing her diagnosis, Kinsella expressed gratitude to her family, close friends, medical care team, and readers for their support.

"To everyone who is suffering from cancer in any form I send love and best wishes, as well as to those who support them," she <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C53DHtNIQ18/">wrote</a>. "It can feel very lonely and scary to have a tough diagnosis, and the support and care of those around you means more than words can say."

Born Dec. 12, 1969, Kinsella penned her first book, "The Tennis Party," at the age of 24. She went on to release the first novel in her "Shopaholic" series, "Confessions of a Shopaholic," in 2000. The book was adapted into the 2009 film of the same name, starring actress Isla Fisher.

Subsequent books in the series included "Shopaholic Takes Manhattan" (2001), "Shopaholic Ties the Knot" (2002), "Shopaholic and Sister" (2004), and "Shopaholic & Baby" (2007). She has also written several best-selling standalone novels, including "Can You Keep A Secret?" (2003) and "The Burnout" (2023).

Kinsella was fondly remembered online by peers and fans alike in the wake of her death.

Penguin Books UK said the acclaimed author "wrote with rare courage and brilliance, with unique wit and warmth."

"We thank her for her books, her voice and her incomparable spirit," the publishing house <a href="https://x.com/PenguinUKBooks/status/1998809427693154400">wrote</a> on X. "We will miss her dearly.⁠"

In a lengthy Instagram <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DSFhDqDgI3w/?hl=en">tribute</a>, author Emily Giffin called Kinsella "a pioneer in women’s fiction," noting that "her heroines were relatable, messy, hopeful, and resilient—and through them, she reminded readers that joy can be its own quiet kind of bravery."

"Her words made the world brighter. Her kindness made it warmer," Giffin added.

Kinsella is survived by her husband of more than 30 years, Henry Wickham, and their five children.
