Maintenance crews at Charlotte Douglas International Airport found a dead body in the landing gear compartment of an American Airlines plane Sunday morning.

The body was found during routine maintenance on a plane that had recently arrived from Europe, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Police are investigating the death, and neither police nor the airline have released information on the victim’s identity or cause of death.

Police officials declined to specify which European location the flight originated from, and both American Airlines and airport representatives have referred inquiries to law enforcement agencies handling the case.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department issued a statement confirming their investigation into the death. Airport officials said they were saddened by the discovery and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation.

American Airlines representatives said the carrier is working with law enforcement on their probe and directed additional questions to police.

Aviation experts estimate that about 75 percent of people who attempt to hide in aircraft undercarriages do not survive the journey due to severe cold temperatures and oxygen deprivation experienced when planes reach cruising altitude.

In January, maintenance workers found <a href="https://www.ntd.com/2-bodies-are-found-in-landing-gear-of-jetblue-plane-at-florida-airport_1039057.html">two bodies</a> in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue aircraft at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The JetBlue bodies were found during routine post-flight inspection procedures in the wheel well section of the plane. That plane had arrived in Fort Lauderdale from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York after making earlier stops in Kingston, Jamaica, and Salt Lake City, Utah.

Paramedics declared both individuals dead at the scene, according to the Broward County sheriff's office. The agency's homicide and crime scene units conducted the investigation.

"At this time, the identities of the individuals and the circumstances surrounding how they accessed the aircraft remain under investigation," JetBlue stated.

"This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred," the airline added.

In December, another body was found in the wheel well of a United Airlines plane after it landed in Maui from Chicago.

The aviation industry has also confronted challenges with unticketed passengers gaining access to aircraft cabins in recent months. In November, a Russian national without a ticket boarded a Paris-bound Delta Air Lines flight in New York after bypassing security. That person was arrested after landing in France.

On Christmas Eve, another ticketless passenger boarded a Delta Air Lines flight from Seattle to Honolulu but was found during taxiing procedures before departure.
