At least three people were killed and three others were injured when a gunman opened fire on Monday outside a casino resort in Reno, Nevada, before police exchanged fire with the suspect and arrested him, officials said.

Two victims were in critical condition, while the other had been released from the hospital, Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth said during a news conference Monday.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was hit by return fire after he fired at Reno police officers and hit a patrol vehicle. The suspect remains in critical condition.

The suspect had no known connection to the victims, police said, adding that the motive is unknown.

The shooting was reported at 7:25 a.m. in the valet area of the Grand Sierra Resort, according to the authorities.

"The Reno Police Department arrived on scene within two and a half minutes," a <a href="https://www.renopd.com/news">police statement</a> reads. "Officers immediately located the suspect at which time an officer involved shooting occurred."

The shooter walked up to the casino-hotel’s valet parking area, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at a group of people, police said. His gun initially malfunctioned but he quickly was able to get it to shoot.

The suspect fled on foot through the parking lot where he encountered an armed casino security guard. Crawforth said the gunman opened fire on the guard, who returned fire as the shooter fled.

The suspect also shot at someone driving by in the parking lot, striking and killing the driver.

Caroline Ackerman, a spokesperson for Renown Regional Medical Center, confirmed the hospital’s emergency department received several patients with gunshot wounds.

Authorities said in an <a href="https://x.com/RenoPolice/status/1949857218289131837">update</a> that there is no longer a threat to the community.

Police warned residents to stay out of the area, urging the public to please avoid the west side parking lot. Multiple emergency vehicles, including several ambulances, responded outside the casino.

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo said that his office is aware of the shooting and posted a <a href="https://x.com/JosephMLombardo/status/1949875163367166096">statement</a> on X, saying the Nevada Public Safety Department was assisting local authorities, including the Washoe County Sheriff's Office and Reno Police Department.

The Grand Sierra Resort is one of Reno’s most prominent venues, hosting concerts, sporting events and a campaign rally by President Donald Trump before the 2024 election. Near the California border and just northeast of Lake Tahoe, the town is a popular summer tourist destination.
