One serving lieutenant colonel, as well as four more retired military officers, detained or investigated on suspicion of leaking military secrets to China.

According to earlier court records, at least 21 officers with the rank of captain or above have been convicted of spying for Beijing.

The island's defense ministry now saying it's gathered "concrete evidence" of the issue, calling for strict legal punishments for the crimes.

Taipei also vowed to boost its defense system to counter foreign espionage activities, especially from China.

According to a Reuters investigation, Beijing has ramped up its espionage campaign in Taiwan in recent years as it pushes the island to accept Chinese sovereignty.

The Chinese Communist Party claims the island as its own. Though it has never ruled Taiwan.
