The International Brotherhood of Teamsters said on Sept. 18 that it will not endorse a presidential candidate, the first time it has declined to do so since 1966.

Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien said in a statement, “Neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure the interests of working people are always put before Big Business.”

“We sought commitments from both Trump and Harris not to interfere in critical union campaigns or core Teamsters industries—and to honor our members’ right to strike—but were unable to secure those pledges,” O’Brien added.

Earlier on Wednesday, the union released internal polling showing that more than half of its members favor former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris. In a poll conducted from Sept. 9 to Sept. 15, 58 percent of members backed Trump, while 31 percent favored Harris.

The Teamsters, with roughly 1.3 million members, is one of the largest labor unions in the United States. While it has traditionally announced presidential endorsements following the two major party’s respective nominating conventions, this year, its president said the union’s leadership was waiting to hear from both candidates to make a final decision.

O’Brien is the union’s first president in its 121-year history to speak at the Republican National Convention (RNC). He gave a speech advocating for working-class families but did not offer an endorsement.

Trump and President Joe Biden had met with the Teamsters earlier this year to seek the group’s endorsement. Harris made her pitch during a roundtable discussion with the union’s leadership on Monday.

The union president described Harris as a “very polished person” and said their discussion touched on issues, including passing the Protecting the Right to Organize Act and a veto on any national right-to-work legislation.

When Reps. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) and Steve King (R-Iowa) introduced the National Right to Work Act in 2017, Trump endorsed it.

“The president believes in right to work,” then-White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters during a Feb. 3, 2017, press conference.

On Monday, O’Brien said that “there wasn’t a whole lot of difference” between Harris and Biden on union support.

“Joe Biden’s been great for unions. Joe Biden’s, you know, obviously done a lot of work and we want to make sure that that work is carried on by whoever,” O’Brien said.

The Teamsters have historically endorsed Democrats for president and did so in 2020 when backing Biden. O’Brien took over in 2021 and bucked tradition by speaking at this year’s RNC, but he was critical of comments Trump made in an interview with X CEO Elon Musk when the former president endorsed firing workers who threaten to strike.

“Firing workers for organizing, striking, and exercising their rights as Americans is economic terrorism,” O’Brien said in a statement at the time.

O’Brien, however, disputed the assumption that the Teamsters should inherently endorse a Democratic presidential candidate.

“We don’t just represent registered Democrats, we represent registered Republicans and independents, so we have to take [that] into consideration,” O’Brien told reporters on Sept. 16.

Since launching her bid for the presidency on July 21, Harris has received dozens of union endorsements, including from the United Auto Workers, the AFL-CIO, the United Farm Workers, the American Federation of Teachers, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and the United Steelworkers.
