A group of Texas lawmakers has been appointed to investigate the catastrophic July 4 flooding that left at least 136 people dead in central Texas.

“In July, Texans were deeply saddened by the deadly flooding on the Guadalupe River, where amongst many others, 27 vibrant young girls were lost from one camp, Camp Mystic,” Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said Monday in announcing the investigative committee.

Torrential rain caused the Guadalupe River—which winds through several popular summer camps—to surge from 3 feet to 30 feet within hours, sweeping through Camp Mystic before dawn. Many of the youngest victims were staying in riverside cabins when the floodwaters struck.

One camper, 8-year-old Cile Steward, remains missing.
