President Donald Trump called for the death penalty for Decarlos Brown Jr., the man charged with the murder of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian immigrant, on Charlotte’s light rail. Trump’s comments were posted on social media, where he <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/115180060678818221">wrote</a>: “The ANIMAL who so violently killed the beautiful young lady from Ukraine, who came to America searching for peace and safety, should be given a ‘Quick’ (there is no doubt!) Trial, and only awarded THE DEATH PENALTY. There can be no other option!!!”

The attack took place on Aug. 22, when Brown stabbed Zarutska multiple times from behind as she rode the light rail after work. Surveillance footage showed the murder, and officers arrested Brown on the platform after the incident.

On <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-charges-light-rail-attacker-federal-crime">Sept. 9</a>, federal prosecutors filed a criminal complaint charging Brown with committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system, a federal offense that carries a potential sentence of life in prison or death.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced the charges. “We are going to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. We have taken the case because it’s murder on mass transit. Progressive DAs cannot handle this case. Justice will be served, and he will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Bondi <a href="https://x.com/seanhannity/status/1965592828072886407">said</a> on X.

Bondi stated in a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-charges-light-rail-attacker-federal-crime">press release</a>, “I have directed my attorneys to federally prosecute DeCarlos Brown Jr., a repeat violent offender with a history of violent crime, for murder. We will seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable act of violence — he will never again see the light of day as a free man.”

Lawmakers and officials have expressed support for Trump’s push for the death penalty. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) shared a photo of the attack on social media, <a href="https://x.com/RepNancyMace/status/1965613033306431805">writing</a>, “The death penalty is in order.” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also expressed support for the death penalty, <a href="https://x.com/SecDuffy/status/1965786000019390763">posting</a> that Trump is right. "Iryna Zarutska fled war-torn Ukraine for the beauty and grace of America. Charlotte, North Carolina failed her. Iryna’s parents say she would want to be buried here because she loved our country," Duffy shared as he posted Trump's call for the death penalty.

In <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/restoring-the-death-penalty-and-protecting-public-safety/">January 2025</a>, Trump signed an executive order titled “Restoring the Death Penalty and Protecting Public Safety.” The move reversed former President Biden’s 2021 moratorium on federal executions and Biden's late-2024 decision to commute most federal death sentences to life without parole.

Trump’s order directed the Justice Department to again pursue capital punishment in eligible cases, prioritize death sentences for crimes such as the killing of police officers, and encourage states to strengthen their own use of the death penalty.

As of 2025, only three inmates remain on federal death row: Robert Bowers, convicted in the 2018 Tree of Life Synagogue shooting; Dylann Roof, who killed nine worshippers in a South Carolina church in 2015; and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, sentenced for the Boston Marathon bombing.

Their sentences were not commuted when President Joe Biden granted clemency to 37 of the 40 federal death row prisoners in December 2024, citing an administration policy to spare all but terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder cases, <a href="https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/state-and-federal-info/federal-death-penalty/list-of-federal-death-row-prisoners">according</a> to the Death Penalty Information Center.

"Before, during, and after the founding of the United States, our cities, States, and country have continuously relied upon capital punishment as the ultimate deterrent and only proper punishment for the vilest crimes," Trump's executive order stated. "Our Founders knew well that only capital punishment can bring justice and restore order in response to such evil. For this and other reasons, capital punishment continues to enjoy broad popular support."

Trump's executive order states that "judges who oppose capital punishment have likewise disregarded the law by falsely claiming that capital punishment is unconstitutional, even though the Constitution explicitly acknowledges the legality of capital punishment."

The <a href="https://constitution.congress.gov/browse/essay/amdt8-1/ALDE_00000258/">Eighth Amendment</a> to the U.S. Constitution addresses the death penalty, prohibits cruel and unusual punishment, and requires that penalties—including the death penalty—be proportionate to the crime.

According to the Justice Department, Brown could face either life in prison or the death penalty, with the final sentence to be decided by the Court in line with federal sentencing guidelines and statutory considerations. The FBI, along with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, is handling the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Odulio is prosecuting the case.
