President Donald Trump addressed the 80th session of the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYRfQo6JMxc">United Nations General Assembly</a> on Tuesday, criticizing the international governing body for poor leadership in ending wars and failed climate and migration policies.

Here are some key takeaways from the president’s nearly hour-long speech:
<h2>Trump on UN: 'Empty Words Don’t Solve War'</h2>
Trump began his speech by criticizing the U.N. for not living up to its potential.

The president said the organization only seems to write “strongly-worded letters” but never follows up on them.

“It's empty words, and empty words don't solve war. The only thing that solves war is action,” <a href="https://x.com/i/broadcasts/1eaJbjZQqjjJX">Trump said</a>.

Trump spoke about endless conflicts and asserted he ended seven long wars that were “unendable” without any help from the U.N.

He specifically condemned the decision of several countries to recognize Palestinian statehood.

"Now, as if to encourage continued conflict, some of this body is seeking to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state. The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists for their atrocities. This would be a reward for these horrible atrocities."

Trump stressed that Hamas is still holding hostages and has rejected offers for peace.

"Instead of giving in to Hamas's ransom demands, those who want peace should be united with one message: release the hostages now," Trump said.

Trump also accused China and India of being the "primary funders" of Russia's war in Ukraine, claiming that their continued purchases of Russian oil were providing Russia with the revenue needed to continue the conflict.

The president further threatened Russia with new and “very strong rounds of powerful tariffs” if Moscow doesn’t agree to a peace deal, ramping up pressure on European allies to cease all energy purchases from Russia.

"For those tariffs to be effective, European nations, all of you gathered here right now, would have to join us in adopting the exact same measures,” Trump said. “I mean you're much closer to the city. We have an ocean in between. You're right there and Europe has to step it up. They can't be doing what they're doing. They're buying oil and gas from Russia while they're fighting Russia."

“What is the purpose of the United Nations?” Trump asked.

The U.N. was <a href="https://www.un.org/en/about-us/history-of-the-un">created in 1945</a> with the mission to maintain international peace and security, provide humanitarian assistance, protect human rights, and uphold international law.
<h2>Migration Policies</h2>
Trump accused the U.N. of funding uncontrolled migration, saying the organization has assisted asylum seekers by offering cash support and “funding an assault on Western countries.”

Every sovereign nation must have the right to control its own borders and limit the number of migrants entering its country, Trump said.

“Where migrants have violated laws, lodged false asylum claims, or claimed refugee status for illegitimate reasons, they should in many cases be immediately sent home. ... We have to solve it in their countries, not create new problems in our countries."

At the same time, Trump said the United States will always have compassion for those struggling in other countries. Trump noted, however, that the answers to those problems must be solved in their own countries instead of creating more problems in the United States.

Trump touted U.S. migration policy as his administration continues its massive, nationwide effort to crack down on illegal immigration. Democrats and migrant advocates have criticized Trump’s sweeping immigration policies, accusing the president of sowing fear in Americans by conducting raids targeting illegal immigrants across the country.

Trump also singled out Europe, saying it was in "serious trouble" over migration.
<h2>Green Energy Policies</h2>
Trump dismissed climate change as “the greatest con job” ever perpetrated by the U.N.

"All of these predictions made by the United Nations and many others, often for bad reasons, were wrong,” Trump said, adding that climate initiatives have cost those countries fortunes.

He also warned countries that have invested heavily in renewable energy that their economies will suffer.

When Trump took office for a second term, the United States submitted its withdrawal for a second time from the Paris Agreement, a 2015 landmark international treaty signed by 195 countries to limit global warming.

Trump said his administration is carrying out a cost-competitive "energy dominance" agenda that focuses on producing and exporting oil, gas, and coal, as well as nuclear, while sidelining renewable energy.

"We have the most oil of any nation anywhere, oil and gas in the world, and if you add coal, we have the most of any nation in the world," he said.

Nations that signed the Paris Treaty agreed to regularly update their own climate action plans. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to hold a climate summit at the U.N. on Wednesday that will focus on those plans.

Guterres has tried to keep the world focused on continuing a global transition away from fossil fuels toward clean energy.

“Just follow the money,” Guterres said in June, adding that $2 trillion flowed into clean energy last year, $800 billion more than fossil fuels and up almost 70 percent in a decade.
