President Donald Trump's border czar Tom Homan announced on Thursday the end of the federal surge in Minnesota.

Homan touted the success of Operation Metro Surge during a press conference, saying it has taken criminal illegal immigrants off the streets, including murderers, sex offenders, national security threats, gang members, and other violent criminals.

Homan, who was tasked by Trump to oversee enforcement of operations in the state, said that he suggested to the president that the federal surge wind down.

"With that success that has been made arresting public safety threats and other priorities since this surge operation began, as well as the unprecedented levels of coordination we have obtained from state officials and local law enforcement, I have proposed, and President Trump has concurred, that this surge operation conclude," Homan said.

Local and state leaders, along with many residents, had opposed the federal presence. Tensions escalated after Renee Good and Alex Pretti were shot and killed by federal agents during federal enforcement operations in January.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz weighed in on the decision to withdraw federal agents from the state.

"They thought they could break us, but a love for our neighbors and a resolve to endure can outlast an occupation," Mayor Jacob Frey <a href="https://x.com/MayorFrey/status/2021962671311233438?s=20">wrote on X</a>. "These patriots of Minneapolis are showing that it’s not just about resistance — standing with our neighbors is deeply American."

The federal government needs to be held accountable for the “economic ruin” it left behind, Walz said later Thursday during a separate press conference.

The governor said the operation negatively impacted the state’s economy, schools, and livelihood of residents, emphasizing that there’s a “long road to recovery” ahead.

“The federal government needs to pay for what they broke here,” Walz said in a separate press conference Thursday. “There are going to be accountability on things that happened, but one of them is the incredible and immense cost borne by the people of this state. The federal government needs to be responsible.”

Walz said that the Trump administration also left them with “unanswered questions,” including the status of the investigations into the shooting deaths of Good and Pretti.

More than 4,000 illegal immigrants have been apprehended since the operation began in November, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Meanwhile, Homan said moving forward that he hopes Congress will take action on sanctuary cities and states. He specifically pointed to policies that allow for illegal immigrants to be released from jails.

“Releasing public safety threats back into the public is just stupid,” Homan said, arguing that it shouldn’t be a partisan issue.

Homan noted that federal government personnel assigned to conduct criminal investigations into widespread fraud in the state will “remain in place until their work is done.”
