President Donald Trump on Wednesday ordered an additional 500 National Guard troops to the nation's capital following a targeted shooting just blocks from the White House.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth told reporters that Trump requested the extra soldiers after a gunman opened fire on two West Virginia National Guard members.

"That will only stiffen our resolve," Hegseth <a href="https://x.com/FoxNews/status/1993814702363722053?s=20">said</a>. "We will never back down. We will secure our capital."

More than 300 West Virginia National Guard members were deployed to Washington in August. Last week, about 160 of them volunteered to extend their deployment until the end of the year, while the rest returned to West Virginia just over a week ago.

The president vowed justice would be served and the perpetrator would be held accountable for Wednesday's ambush.

"The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price," Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115617866419112089">wrote on</a> Truth Social. "God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!"

The federal surge is part of Trump's broader crackdown on criminal activity. Currently, 2,188 troops are <a href="https://apnews.com/article/national-guard-shooting-dc-c5785dd8920d2d1ac7d71fab769faf5f?taid=69277f9f3977f8000177a521&utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&utm_medium=AP&utm_source=Twitter">assigned</a> to the joint task force operating in Washington.

The presence of the National Guard in the nation’s capital has triggered legal battles and a broader debate about the Trump administration’s policies, particularly the use of the military to combat local crime.

Hegseth touted the soldiers' mission in Washington in the wake of the shooting.

"The drop in crime has been historic. The increase in safety and security has been historic. But if criminals want to conduct things like this—violence against America's best—we will never back down," Hegseth <a href="https://www.war.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/Article/4343985/hegseth-to-order-500-additional-guardsmen-to-dc-following-shooting-of-two-soldi/">said</a>.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser has acknowledged that the federal surge has helped the Metropolitan Police Department, citing a significant decrease in crime, including homicides and carjackings.

Bowser on Wednesday condemned Wednesday's brazen act of violence.

"Today's attack on two members of the West Virginia National Guard was horrific and unconscionable," Bowser <a href="https://x.com/MayorBowser/status/1993807257365303470">wrote on X</a>. "We can confirm that a suspect is in custody for this targeted shooting and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

Speaking to service members at Fort Campbell, Vice President JD Vance urged Americans to pray that the guardsmen who were injured in the line of duty would be able to spend Thanksgiving with their families.

Vance called the attack a reminder to the country of the service members' sacrifice.

"It's a somber reminder that soldiers, whether they're active duty, reserve or National Guard ... our soldiers are the sword and shield of the United States of America," he <a href="https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/1993792347914817918?s=20">said</a>.

The two soldiers remain in critical condition. The suspect, also injured, is in custody.

A motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
