President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the U.S. Navy could begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, if necessary, and that he has ordered a federal agency to provide political risk insurance for maritime trade in the Gulf.

Trump announced the plan to get oil and trade moving again through the Strait, ensuring the “free flow of energy to the world” despite the current conflict in the Middle East.

The Persian Gulf waterway is the world’s most vital oil export route, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman.

"Effective IMMEDIATELY, I have ordered the United States Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to provide, at a very reasonable price, political risk insurance and guarantees for the Financial Security of ALL Maritime Trade, especially Energy, traveling through the Gulf," Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/116166926920657651">wrote on Truth Social.</a>

The measures apply to all shipping lines operating in the region.

Following U.S.-Israel strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, Iranian military officials declared the Strait of Hormuz closed.

"The Strait (of Hormuz) is closed. If anyone tries to pass, the heroes of the Revolutionary Guards and the regular navy will set those ships ablaze," Ebrahim Jabari, a senior adviser to the Guards commander-in-chief, said in <a href="https://x.com/TTheBattlefield/status/2028571594398790005?s=20">remarks</a> broadcast by state media.

Tankers traveling through the strait, which is bordered in the north by Iran, carry oil and gas from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, and Iran.

Experts warned about the impact of any disruption to oil trade. Threats to the key shipping route in the past have <a href="https://apnews.com/article/stock-market-oil-iran-attack-2d05b0a9e52320e822b649b8e29d28aa">spiked global energy prices</a>, including most recently during the Twelve‑Day War between Israel and Iran in mid‑June 2025.

“The scale of what is at stake cannot be overstated,” according to Hakan Kaya, senior portfolio manager at investment management firm Neuberger Berman. A partial slowdown lasting a week or two could be absorbed by oil companies,  but a near or full closure lasting a month or more would push crude oil prices, trading above $75 on Tuesday, “well into triple digits,” Kaya said. European natural gas prices could increase above crisis levels last seen in 2022.

Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), said on March 3, “We are … sinking the Iranian Navy, the entire navy.”

The said the effort was dismantling Iran’s capacity to target international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters.

“For decades, the Iran regime has harassed international shipping. Today, there's not a single Iranian ship underway in the Iranian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, or the Gulf of Oman.”

Trump hinted that more actions are to come, in addition to Tuesday’s orders protecting trade through the strait.

"The United States will ensure the FREE FLOW of ENERGY to the WORLD. The United States’ ECONOMIC and MILITARY MIGHT is the GREATEST ON EARTH," Trump added.
