President Donald Trump warned Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey that he's "playing with fire" on Wednesday.

"Surprisingly, Mayor Jacob Frey just stated that, 'Minneapolis does not, and will not, enforce Federal Immigration Laws,'" Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/115972940749866695">wrote on Truth Social.</a> "This is after having had a very good conversation with him. Could somebody in his inner sanctum please explain that this statement is a very serious violation of the Law, and that he is PLAYING WITH FIRE!"

Trump had deployed his border czar Tom Homan to meet with Frey about the ongoing federal enforcement operation in Minneapolis. While Frey said the conversation with Homan was <a href="https://x.com/MayorFrey/status/2016241029217739171">productive</a>, the mayor also shared with him the "<a href="https://x.com/MayorFrey/status/2016241030811541701?s=20">serious negative impacts</a>" of the operation on the city.

Frey responded to the president's recent comments about the city’s decision not to enforce federal immigration laws.

"The job of our police is to keep people safe, not enforce fed immigration laws," the <a href="https://x.com/MayorFrey/status/2016517831538446802">mayor wrote</a>. "I want them preventing homicides, not hunting down a working dad who contributes to MPLS & is from Ecuador. It’s similar to the policy your guy Rudy had in NYC. Everyone should feel safe calling 911."

The dialogue between the federal government and local officials follows two high-profile, deadly shootings involving federal agents. 37-year-old Renee Good was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on Jan. 7. A few weeks later, 37-year-old Alex Pretti was shot and killed.

Meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has called for an independent probe into Pretti's death, suggesting that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) should appoint a special commission.

“For calm to be restored, an independent investigation is the least that should be done,” Rand <a href="https://x.com/SenRandPaul/status/2016146821072969927">wrote on X. </a>

When asked whether Pretti’s death was justified, President Donald Trump said there’s a “big investigation” into the shooting.

"I want to see the investigation," Trump <a href="https://www.ntd.com/trump-says-noem-isnt-resigning-shes-doing-a-good-job_1122173.html">told reporters</a>. "I'm going to be watching over it. I want a very honorable and honest investigation. I have to see it myself."

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that federal agents have arrested 16 demonstrators in Minnesota after they allegedly assaulted federal law enforcement officers.

"People who have been resisting and impeding our federal law enforcement agents," she said in a <a href="https://x.com/agpambondi/status/2016585421027754465?s=46&t=0Qj6eEHqNzEkXG3p2yQTgA">post on X</a>.  "I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: NOTHING will stop President Trump and this Department of Justice from enforcing the law.
