President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to pull federal funding from California after a transgender high school athlete recently won a regional track meet and advanced to the state final.

Trump accused California of continuing to "illegally" allow boys to participate in girls' sports despite his Feb. 5 <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/02/keeping-men-out-of-womens-sports/">executive order</a> that banned transgender student athletes from playing women’s sports.

"This week a transitioned Male athlete, at a major event, won 'everything,' and is now qualified to compete in the 'State Finals' next weekend," Trump wrote in a <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114579949187402607">post on Truth Social.</a> “As a Male, he was a less than average competitor. As a Female, this transitioned person is practically unbeatable. THIS IS NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS.”

AB Hernandez, a junior at Jurupa Valley High School in southern California, won the girls' long jump and triple jump at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section finals on May 17. CIF is the governing body for high school sports in California. According to its bylaws, CIF supports the participation of transgender athletes in sports in alignment with <a href="https://cifss.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/0Agenda-Council-Oct-25-Pt-3.pdf">state law</a>.

NTD reached out to the governor for a response to Trump's statement. Newsom's office pointed to Tuesday's CIF announcement, made prior to Trump's post, which stated that biological female athletes won't be displaced in field events while still allowing transgender athletes to compete and medal for the upcoming state finals.

CIF said in its <a href="https://x.com/CIFState/status/1927408556791218386">statement</a> that it made the decision to "pilot an entry process" after last weekend's qualifying meets.

"Under this pilot entry process, any biological female student-athlete who would have earned the next qualifying mark for one of their Section's automatic qualifying entires in the CIF state meet, and did not achieve the CIF State at-large mark in the finals at their Section meet, was extended an opportunity to participate in the 2025 CIF State Track and Field Championships," CIF wrote.

Izzy Gardon, the governor's director of communications, told NTD that Newsom supports the move.

"CIF's proposed pilot is a reasonable, respectful way to navigate a complex issue without compromising competitive fairness—a model worth pursuing," Gardon told NTD in an emailed statement. "The Governor is encouraged by this thoughtful approach.”

NTD also reached out to CIF for a separate statement seeking to clarify what the new policy means going forward, but did not receive a response by publication.

Meanwhile, Trump said he would be "ordering local authorities" to prohibit the transgender athlete from competing in the upcoming championship. The president noted that Newsom himself publicly stated that boys competing against girls was unfair.

During the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XJ6rQDRKGA">first episode</a> of Newsom’s podcast “This is Gavin Newsom” on March 6, the governor spoke with conservative figure Charlie Kirk who asked, "Would you say no men in female sports?"

“I think it’s an issue of fairness,” Newsom replied. “I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness. It’s deeply unfair,” he said.

The governor noted that California passed a law in 2013 allowing students to use bathrooms and participate in sports teams based on the gender they identify with.

The athlete at the center of the latest controversy recently discussed the criticism over participating in the sport as a transgender athlete. Biological females have beaten Hernandez in other track and field events, the athlete pointed out during a <a href="https://capitalandmain.com/a-league-of-her-own-transgender-athlete-ab-hernandez-faces-down-hecklers">May 15 interview.</a>

“This puts your idiotic claims to trash," Hernandez said. "Now you have no proof that I can’t be beat."

Trump said he would speak to the governor on Tuesday about the issue. Newsom’s office declined to confirm with NTD whether the conversation between the president and governor had already taken place.

CIF State Finals are set to take place in Fresno on May 30 and 31.
