Japan's new Foreign Minister said Wednesday that he welcomes U.S. President Donald Trump's upcoming visit to Tokyo next week.

Toshimistu Motegi said it will be the first time Trump meets with Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

"I hope it would be a good opportunity for the two leaders to build trust on a personal level, which would encourage them to discuss further strengthening of Japan-U.S. alliance and to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific," Motegi added.

Takaichi took office on Tuesday after being elected Japan's first female leader.
