President Donald Trump has announced plans for the U.S. Navy to build a new “Trump class” of battleship as part of his larger goal to create a “Golden Fleet” for the U.S. Navy.

Trump, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, War Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Navy Secretary John Phelan, revealed the shipbuilding initiative on Monday afternoon at his Mar-a-lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

“As Commander-in-Chief, it's my great honor to announce that I've approved a plan for the Navy to begin the construction of two brand new, very large battleships,” Trump said. “They'll be the fastest, the biggest, and by far—100 times more powerful than any battleship ever built.”

Two will be built initially, and a total of 25 will ultimately be a part of the Golden Fleet initiative, Trump said. The president added that the fleet will be armed with hypersonic missiles, rail guns, and high-powered lasers—all technologies that are still being developed by the U.S. military.

The U.S. Navy will have a direct role in designing the ships, and a rendering was displayed of the first ship, dubbed USS Defiant.

“The President has been clear—we must bring back our American Maritime Industrial might, and he has told me many times that as Secretary of the Navy, it is my job to equip our sailors to win the fight at sea with the finest ships in our history,” <a href="https://www.goldenfleet.navy.mil">Phelan said.</a> “Now when a conflict arises, you’re going to ask us two questions: where is the carrier, and where is the battleship.”

The nation’s next battleship will have the ability to strike an adversary at 100 times the range of the previous class, according to the newly created <a href="https://www.goldenfleet.navy.mil/">website</a> for the Golden Fleet.

The new “guided missile battleship” is set to be roughly the same size as <a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-navy-golden-fleet-battleship-0940368b39b19f03abe8689ebad08380">World War II-era Iowa-class battleships</a> but only weigh about half as much, at around 35,000 tons. It will also be manned by far smaller crews of between 650 and 850 sailors.

“The U.S. Navy is a visible symbol of American strength and resolve to defend our Nation throughout the globe—and it requires the most capable and advanced fleet,” the Navy said in a statement. “The Golden Fleet is the Navy’s bold investment to revitalize America’s maritime industrial base, rapidly building and sustaining the fleet, and fundamentally changing how we do business in order to keep projecting peace through power.”

Additionally, construction of this new fleet will create “thousands of American jobs,” the president said during Monday’s announcement.

The renewed shipbuilding initiative comes after the Navy last month scrapped its plans to build a new, smaller warship due to growing delays and costs. It has also failed in the past to build other newly-designed ships on time and within budget, including the Ford-class aircraft carrier and Columbia-class submarines.
