Ukraine's top diplomat said Wednesday that Kyiv was open to talks with Russia, if Russia was prepared to negotiate in good faith. He added he saw no evidence of that for now.

Ukraine's foreign minister is visiting China, seeking a peace deal with Russia through Beijing.

The Kremlin responded that Ukraine's signal on talks appeared to be in unison with Russia's own position, but that more details were needed.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been ongoing for two and a half years. Every effort to achieve peace has failed so far.

What could the latest attempt look like? And why did Ukraine turn to China for help?

Anders Corr, publisher of the Journal of Political Risk and principal at Corr Analytics, said that China is preparing for an invasion of Taiwan. He thinks by 2027 or 2028, Russia will be able to rebuild its military and Iran may have a nuclear weapon by that time, so these two countries could support China.

Mr. Corr also believes that Ukraine might lose some territory if former President Donald Trump is reelected.
