North Korea is accused of using remote tech workers to infiltrate U.S. companies in an effort to covertly fund its weapons program. The Justice Department said on Monday that federal agents arrested a New Jersey man in the alleged scheme and searched stashes of laptops across 16 states.

Prosecutors say the tech workers—with help from contacts in the United States, China, and elsewhere—used fake identities to gain employment at over 100 U.S. companies.

Using so-called laptop farms, the workers logged into company-issued devices to appear as if they were in the United States. They gained access to sensitive corporate networks, including a defense contractor specializing in artificial intelligence.
