U.S. prosecutors say more than 40 American citizens were among those murdered in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel last year, while at least ten American citizens were taken hostage or remain unaccounted for.

A statement from the Justice Department named Yahya Sinwar as the current leader of Hamas, which has been designated as a terrorist organization by the United States since 1997. U.S. officials believe Sinwar is still hiding in the Gaza Strip.

A DOJ official said Tuesday that the charges were first filed in February, but kept under seal. He said that was in case the Department had a chance to arrest any of the defendants.
