A U.S. diplomat was fired by President Donald Trump on Wednesday after his romance with a woman alleged to be a Chinese senior official's daughter came to light.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the diplomat "admitted concealing a romantic relationship with a Chinese national with known ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)."

Trump reviewed the case and approved the dismissal, Pigott added. "Under Secretary Rubio’s leadership, we will maintain a zero-tolerance policy for any employee who is caught undermining our country’s national security," he said.

The State Department did not disclose the diplomat's identity, but a foreign service officer had appeared in a <a href="https://x.com/JamesOKeefeIII/status/1953242589743714404">video</a> produced by James O'Keefe, the founder of Project Veritas, who now conducts undercover camera stings through the O'Keefe Media Group (OMG).

O'Keefe said the diplomat had worked at the State Department for nearly 20 years and oversaw the vetting of all student visas from China.

In the video, the diplomat told OMG’s undercover journalist that he "defied my government for love." He also said his girlfriend’s father was “either a provincial or a federal minister of education. So he's, like, straight up Communist Party,” and that she herself "could have been a spy."

He admits knowing the relationship needed to be reported under State Department rules, but chose not to.

In Beijing, a Chinese regime spokesperson declined to comment on what he said is a domestic U.S. issue. “But I would like to stress that we oppose drawing lines based on ideological difference and maliciously smearing China,” the Foreign Ministry’s Guo Jiakun said at a daily briefing.

The dismissal is believed to be the first of its kind for violating Trump’s executive order on such relationships.

In late December 2024, the Biden administration implemented a "non-fraternization" rule prohibiting all U.S. government personnel in China—including diplomats, family members, and contractors with security clearances—from engaging in romantic or sexual relationships with Chinese citizens.

Upon taking office in January 2025, Trump signed Executive Order 14211 to codify and expand these restrictions, emphasizing "America First" principles by prioritizing protection against foreign influence operations, including "honey trap" tactics attributed to Chinese intelligence.

The CCP, through its Ministry of State Security (MSS), has long employed "honey traps"—using romantic or sexual enticements to target U.S. politicians, diplomats, and officials for intelligence or blackmail.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) was targeted by Christine Fang, a suspected MSS operative, between 2011 and 2015. The FBI briefed him on her espionage risks in 2015, prompting him to cut contact; Fang fled to China soon after.
