President Donald Trump’s push to counter China’s dominance in shipbuilding is starting to have an impact. The United States will begin charging hefty fees on Chinese-built ships that call at American ports, starting mid-October.

Some fleet owners are now rethinking orders from Chinese yards. Meantime, Japanese shipyards are seeing a growing number of inquiries. That’s according to Hitoshi Nagasawa, president of the Japanese shipowners' association.

He told the Financial Times that the new U.S. port fees will weaken China's shipbuilding dominance and boost Japanese and South Korean competitors.

Nagasawa added that relying solely on China for shipbuilding is risky. Some of the world’s largest shipping companies are already pulling Chinese-built ships off U.S. routes, replacing them with South Korean vessels.
