Federal regulators launched an investigation into a Chinese manufacturer of airbag inflators on Thursday. This comes after its airbag inflators exploded during car crashes and killed six people. Airbag inflators have chemicals that ignite during a crash to fill an airbag with gas. They are installed in cars to protect passengers during car crashes.

The investigation marks authorities’ crackdown on after-market air-bag parts in the United States.

The Chinese manufacturer is called Detiannuo Safety Technology (DTN). The company’s website says it doesn't do business in the United States, and its products are banned from being sold in the U.S.

Federal regulators said DTN inflators in the United States likely would have been illegally imported as after-market equipment, and that they were usually installed after the original airbag was used in a prior crash.
