Taiwan’s Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim’s surprise appearance drew wide attention as she urged allies not to exclude Taiwan’s 23 million citizens from global talks on defending freedom and democracy.

Lawmakers warned of Beijing’s economic leverage and potential aggression toward Taiwan, which produces most of the world’s semiconductors. Experts said a conflict there could trigger a multitrillion-dollar global shock.
