The Pentagon on Friday announced the deployment of an aircraft carrier to U.S. Southern Command to target drug trafficking organizations, marking a significant U.S. military buildup in the Latin American region.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hesgeth has directed the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier and its strike group to the area of responsibility, which encompasses Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, in order to "detect, monitor, and disrupt illicit actors and activities that compromise the safety and prosperity of the United States homeland and our security in the Western Hemisphere," Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement.

"These forces will enhance and augment existing capabilities to disrupt narcotics trafficking and degrade and dismantle" transnational criminal organizations, known as TCOs, according to Parnell.

The USS Ford carrier strike group has been <a href="https://www.c6f.navy.mil/Press-Room/News/Article/3553254/uss-gerald-r-ford-carrier-strike-group-arrives-in-the-eastern-mediterranean-sea/">deployed</a> to the Mediterranean Sea, meaning it will take multiple days for the ships to sail back to Southern Command. Parnell did not say exactly where the carrier would be located in the region.

Several weeks ago, the carrier took part in NATO exercises in the North Sea amid heightened tension with Russia over the war in Ukraine.

Earlier Friday, Hegseth said the U.S. military conducted its 10th strike on a suspected drug-running boat, saying that the Tren de Aragua transnational gang was operating the vessel in the Caribbean Sea. The strike left six people dead, he added.

In a social media post, Hegseth said the strike was conducted overnight, and marks the second publicly known military strike the Trump administration has conducted on the Venezuelan gang. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order designating Tren de Aragua, MS-13, and major Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, allowing for the U.S. military to get more involved in action against the criminal organizations.

Two of the most recent military strikes on drug boats were carried out in the eastern Pacific Ocean, expanding the area where the military has launched attacks and shifting to where much of the cocaine from the world’s largest producers is smuggled.

In a 20-second black and white video of the strike posted to social media, a small boat can be seen apparently sitting motionless on the water when a long, thin projectile descends, triggering an explosion. The video ends before the blast dies down enough for the remains of the boat to be seen again.

“If you are a narco-terrorist smuggling drugs in our hemisphere, we will treat you like we treat Al-Qaeda,” Hegseth said in his Friday post, referring to the pan-Islamist terrorist organization that officials say was involved in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. “Day or NIGHT, we will map your networks, track your people, hunt you down, and kill you.”

Trump, Hegseth, and Vice President JD Vance have said that military action is needed against cartels and drug smuggling groups because their operations are a major factor in the tens of thousands of overdose deaths that occur each year in the United States.

When asked Thursday at the White House whether he would request Congress to issue a declaration of war against Mexican drug cartels and similar organizations, Trump indicated that it was not necessary.

"I don’t think we’re going to necessarily ask for a declaration of war. I think we’re just going to kill people that are bringing drugs into our country. OK? We’re going to kill them. You know? They’re going to be, like, dead," the president told reporters at a White House roundtable.

Trump also denied reports that he would send B-1 supersonic bombers near Venezuela.
