An NYPD officer was arrested on federal charges for allegedly spying for the Chinese regime. The criminal complaint of the officer, Baimadajie Angwang, gives insight into another story—NTD approached the officer for an interview last year. He said he needed permission from his boss. But the permission he sought was not from the NYPD.

According to recorded cellphone conversations detailed in Angwang’s criminal complaint, the next day, he went to ask for permission from one of his handlers at the Chinese consulate in New York City. A “handler” is someone Angwang received tasks from, and reported back to, they are officials working for the Chinese regime.
