The United Nations Ocean Conference has begun.
This five-day event is aimed at gaining support for SDG-14.
Sustainable Development Goals-14 calls for ending overfishing, reducing ocean pollution—currently the seas are a trash bin by many nations—and preserving coastal environments.. SDG-14 is a sort of “Paris Accord” for the ocean.
Considering that the world shares a single ocean, how it is treated really matters.
General Assembly President Peter Thomson delivered a no-nonsense opening.
“Our task here at the conference is to support the implementation of SDG-14—to make sure our ocean’s goal is getting the support it needs going forward—and when I say support, it is not the usual bleat about financing. I am talking about all of us all of humanity civil society governments, U.N. system, private sector, and scientific community all getting together and giving the support needed to turn around that cycle of decline into which we have put the ocean.”
