New details have emerged on Shohei Ohtani’s record-breaking contract—with most of the money being deferred until 2034. What’s the advantage of doing this?

The advantage is what it allows them to do now, which is more spending room to surround him with better players—not that they don’t have plenty already.

I mean they’ve won their division 10 of the last 11 seasons.

Specifically, he’s going to be paid just $2 million a year, over the 10 years of this contract, while the remaining $680 million will be paid to him between 2034 and 2043.

Now, I’ve never seen anyone defer anywhere near this much money—either percentage or total amount. He’ll be fine of course because he makes roughly $45 million a year in endorsements.

Maybe it allows them to get some more pitching for next season, cuz Ohtani won’t be pitching, Clayton Kershaw is injured, so they have a glaring need there.
