Police in North Carolina are investigating a homicide after one person reportedly opened fire inside an ambulance on the morning of March 18.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said on Twitter the homicide investigation is ongoing at East Woodlawn Road in South Charlotte and involves one deceased person.

A medical unit was dispatched to the area for one person experiencing “difficulty breathing,” WSOCTV9 reported.

While the patient received treatment inside the ambulance, the patient asked the medical staff if another unidentified individual could join him inside the ambulance.

Medical officials said they do not allow other people inside the ambulance, so the individual left. But, shortly after leaving and following the staff’s instructions, the individual came back and opened fire on the patient inside the emergency vehicle, killing him, according to WSOCTV9.

About a dozen emergency vehicles, including the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police (CMPD), are at the scene, FOX46 reported.

No officers or medical staff got injured in the incident and CMPD officers did not fire their weapons.

FOX46 reported they saw someone getting taken away in handcuffs, but authorities haven’t released any information on the suspect.
