South Korea unveiled a countdown clock for the Winter Olympics on Wednesday (February 8) in Seoul to mark one year until the Pyeongchang Games.

An official ceremony marking the one year countdown to the start of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang will be held on Thursday (February 9). Ahead of the official ceremony for the countdown, the official timekeeper Omega established a digital clock tower at Seoul Plaza in front of Seoul’s city hall and held a ceremony unveiling the clock.

“This is a major milestone as excitement builds toward Olympic winter games PyeongChang 2018, which will be a truly great moment in sporting history. It marks the final stretch of preparations. There is only one year until the world will witness the Republic of Korea’s ability to deliver fantastic Olympic Games, in a wonderful region,” said Gunilla Lindberg, chair of the International Olympic Committee’s Coordination Commission on PyeongChang.

At the end of the ceremony, Omega gave the ‘last-lap bell’ to major officials attending the event.

The clock, designed by Omega, is four meters wide and 4.3 meters tall, with the official Olympic logo and Omega logo on top. The clock will be displayed until March 20, 2018.

The coastal city of Gangue will be used for the figure skating, curling, ice hockey, speed and short-track skating events, while the alpine town of Pyeongchang will stage mountain events such as skiing, sliding and Nordic events.
Major infrastructure projects, including a high speed rail link that will cut travel time between Incheon airport and Pyeongchang to 90 minutes, are on track according to organisers.
