Panda mom nurtures incredibly tiny panda cub born in Japanese zoo
This picture taken on July 11, 2012 shows one of the twin baby Giant Pandas, the first set in 2012, born recently at the China Giant Panda Protection Research Center in Wolong, southwest China's Sichuan province. China is famed for its "panda diplomacy", using the bears as diplomatic gifts to other countries, with about 1,600 remaining in the wild in China, with some 300 others in captivity worldwide -- with the majority in China. A newborn panda cub is receiving intense love from its mom and is under intense watch by the zoo. The cub was just born June 12, a week ago. Even though it’s still tiny, it’s 30 grams (1 ounce) heavier than last week.

The mother, 11-year-old Shin Shin, feeds and plays with her cub all day. Shin Shin lost a cub five years ago. It died days after being born.

Both Shin Shin and Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo want to see this new cub grow healthy and thrive. So they are keeping their eyes glued to Shin Shin and baby.
