The Pentagon says retaliatory strikes over the weekend against Iran-backed militias “destroyed or functionally damaged” dozens of targets at a number of different locations in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. Spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder made the announcement during a Monday press briefing.

Air assaults Friday in Iraq and Syria targeted other Iranian-backed militias and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in retaliation for the drone strike that killed three U.S. troops in Jordan last weekend. The United States fired at Houthi targets again on Sunday.

At the same time, Mr. Ryder said the Pentagon is not seeking any escalation in military action in the region, but will continue to defend U.S. military and citizens in the area.
