The U.S. government sent two Hercules cargo planes full of food to Peru to help flood victims on Thursday, April 6.

Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski sent a tweet confirming the arrival of the supplies after accepting the offer made by U.S. President Donald trump over the telephone.

Peru has been hit by weeks of rain. The resultant flooding has killed more than 100 people so far. Half a million residents have been affected by the localized El Nino weather pattern. The rain is expected to last into May.

Half the country is in a state of emergency. Rebuilding is expected to cost at least $6 billion.

Even after the rain ends, the troubles will not evaporate. Officials fear the spread of mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, dengue, and zika.
