The French SUV, Peugeot 3008, bagged the prestigious European Car of the Year 2017 award on the eve of the 87th International Motor Show in Geneva on Monday (March 6).

The Peugeot 3008 received 319 points from a jury composed of 58 European motor journalists. The Alfa Romeo Giulia came in second place with 296 points.

Peugeot’s SUV has been described by British newspaper “The Telegraph” as “stylish and spacious” and having one of the best interiors of any family car.

“We wanted to catch this award because it is not only the fact to have one award more for us, but it is the result of the work, the job done by all the team” Peugeot Brand CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato told journalists.

Imparato said they have received 125,000 orders for the 3008 in the last five months.

The Car of the Year prize has been awarded since 1964. Last year, it went to Opel Astra.

“Last year, we welcomed the victory of Astra, because they made a great car and I’m pleased to see that today, we continue the adventure together, this is great,” Imparato said.

PSA Group, who owns the Peugeot brand, has agreed to buy Opel from General Motors in a deal valuing the business at 2.2 billion euros ($2.3 billion,) the companies announced on Monday, creating a new regional car giant.

The Geneva Motor show will officially start on Tuesday and will last until March 19.
