Pivotal voting starts in Turkey

Voting has started in Turkey’s constitutional referendum. This vote could reshape the country’s government and change its future in the EU and the world.

After surviving a coup attempt last July, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants more power. He wants to be able to stay in office until 2029, and to take over the powers of the Prime Minister.

If he wins the referendum, Turkey’s president would be almost a dictator.

Erdogan has drawn criticism from the EU for his crackdown after the failed July coup. Erdogan has imprisoned approximately 47,000 people and plans to lock up many more if he wins the election.
