Police in Indiana arrested two parents after someone driving by their vehicle called the police.

On March 9, the passerby noticed the parents’ SUV sitting in the middle of the road in Carroll County.

The passerby then alerted officers that there were two unresponsive adults and three children in the vehicle.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and found the parents passed out, reportedly suffering from a heroin overdose. After treatment at a local hospital, both were arrested on preliminary charges of felony neglect of a dependent child.

The parents were identified as Adam Smith, 31, and his wife Donnis Smith, 29, reported WTHR.

An investigation led authorities to a residence in Delphi, Indiana, about 60 miles north of Indianapolis, where they served a search warrant.

The warrant led to the arrest of Sara Huff, 43, for several drug-related violations, including dealing methamphetamine and cocaine, reported WLFI. Also inside the home was Dustin Prater, 31, who was arrested for outstanding warrants.

The children, aged 4, 6, and 11, were put under the care of child protective services.

Carroll County Sheriff Tobe Leazenby said he’s seen the same cycle of abuse in the county repeatedly.

“They will do almost anything to get that fix whether or not they place another person or a child in danger,” he told CBS4.

The spike in drug cases has led to overcrowding at his jail, prompting the sheriff to push for more drug treatment centers.

He said he has a message for drug users who are trying to get clean:

“I’m not in a position where I’m going to tell people how to choose their friends but rethink it, seriously. Who are you hanging out with and who are you with? Maybe some of that is the root of your issues,” he said.
