A commuter was stabbed to death at the Pentagon subway station on Monday morning, Metropolitan Police Department said in an announcement, adding that an investigation is ongoing.

On Monday morning at 9 a.m. local time, Metro Transit Police deputies were dispatched to the lower level of the Yellow Line subway platform at Pentagon Metro Station in Arlington, Virginia.

Officers who arrived at the scene found an adult male, motionless, in a pool of blood, police reported on Twitter.

“At approximately 9 a.m., MTPD and Pentagon Force Protection responded to the Pentagon Station for a stabbing that occurred on the lower level platform. The victim, an adult male, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” the message read.

“I walked into the station and saw red stuff on the ground. I almost stepped in it, and looked over,” a witness named Lauren told ARL. “There was a man motionless on the ground, and Pentagon police with guns came running in.”

Lauren, who only wanted to be identified by her first name, went on to describe how she found that the red substance she almost stepped in was, in fact, blood. “I hopped on a train really fast, unsure of where the person who did it was and just trying to get to safety,” Lauren added.

The man, whose identity has not been revealed, was pronounced dead at the hospital. He had been stabbed in the neck.

Police said in a statement that “preliminary suspect information has been established” and that an investigation is ongoing.

Following the attack, Pentagon Station was closed and the Blue and Yellow subway lines were diverted.

“Trains are bypassing Pentagon Station in both directions due to the ongoing police investigation. Preliminary suspect information has been established and an investigation is ongoing,” police wrote on a Twitter update.
