Ashwin Daudia, 51, has been sentenced to life and a minimum of 18 years for murdering his ex-wife Kiran Daudia.

Authorities took the opportunity to release two pieces of CCTV footage that show a man, who they say is Daudia, dragging a large suitcase down a street. Inside the suitcase, authorities said, was the dead body of Kiran Daudia, Metro reported.

Daudia was convicted of strangling his ex-wife with her own scarf on Jan. 16, 2017. He then tied her body with cable ties and stuffed it into the suitcase.

For over three hours he kept it in the back garden of his home in North Evington, Leicester, U.K. After dark, he dragged the suitcase to an alleyway one street over where he left the suitcase by garbage cans.

The couple had an arranged marriage in India in 1988 and divorced in 2014. They were living together until their house was sold. The sale was due to be finalized on the day of the murder. The house was sold to Kiran Daudia’s sister and Daudia was to move out.

“The truth is this, isn’t it, Mr. Daudia? On 16 January you were very angry with Kiran because she was getting the house and you were losing everything. Is that right?” said prosecutor William Harbage, according to BBC.

“Yes,” he replied.

Daudia said he got angry and lost control after ex-wife started hitting, kicking, shouting, and swearing at him when she returned home that day. But Harbage said, “You did it quite deliberately and then afterward, very coolly, you disposed of the evidence.”

“You deliberately strangled her, didn’t you?” asked Harbage.

“I did not do it deliberately,” Daudia replied. “At that time my mind was not working.”

He said he hid the body in the suitcase so as not to scare their youngest son after he returned from college. Harbage said Daudia did it to protect himself.

The body was found Jan. 17 and Ashwin Daudia was arrested. He initially said he knew nothing of his wife’s death. He later acknowledged he lied and was “sorry” for doing so, he told the court.
