Portuguese truck driver survives fire, loses livelihood

A deadly wildfire hit central Portugal over the weekend.

Truck driver Jose Carlos wasn’t home. He survived the fire that killed 64 people.

His wife and son remained in their home, but also survived the blaze.

The fire destroyed their family car and Carlos’s truck. It also burned his chainsaws and took down the trees by the house.

“The truck and the car, I used them for work and also the chainsaws…I have nothing. I managed to save the tractor, it’s what I managed to save and the house, it’s the most important,” said Carlos.

Though they are lucky to be alive, the fire has taken away their livelihood.

“We started work last September and now everything we invested in is gone and we don’t have the means to start again,” said Carlos.

Many people in Portugal, like the Carlos family, have lost everything.
