President Donald Trump hosted a reception in honor of Greek Independence Day at the White House on Friday (March 24).
The day commemorates the Greek’s fight to regain sovereignty after nearly 400 years of outside rule, which began on March 25, 1821.
The celebration is a tradition that dates back to the Reagan administration, Trump said.
During the reception Trump called ancient Greece “the birthplace of democracy.”
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople was among the distinguished guests at the reception.
