President Trump said Americans and Australians “forged iron bonds between our two countries” during their fight against common enemies.

Speaking at a dinner commemorating the 75th anniversary of the World War II Battle of the Coral Sea, where Australian and U.S. forces turned the tide in the war against Japan, Trump said, “Our two nations were born as the rebellious children of the same parent.”

“For nearly a century, Americans and Australians have fought together, bled together and died together as brothers and sisters,” he continued.

Before the dinner the president met with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

The discussion ranged from “national security to trade, to immigration, and enhanced economic cooperation,” the president said.
