More than 80 million Americans have already cast their ballots either in-person or via mail—that’s about 60 percent of the total votes counted in the 2016 general election—with millions more expected to hit the polls on election day.
To make matters more complicated this year, certain states are accepting mail-in ballots up to 17 days after Nov. 3. This almost certainly means a longer vote counting process and delayed results, particularly if the vote is close in battleground states like Pennsylvania or North Carolina.
