Cicadas, billions of them! A rare brood co-emergence of these noisy insects will occur in the Eastern United States this year. NTD learns more about the phenomenon and how it will affect Americans from Gene Kritsky, a professor emeritus of biology at Mount St. Joseph University.
Mr. Kritsky says some wooded and suburban areas of central Illinois will see the broods overlap. Residents of 18 states across the Midwest and South could be in for buzzing noises of up to 96 decibels—which is louder than a gas-powered lawnmower.
