Several tornadoes just hit central Illinois in December.

The tornadoes ripped roofs off homes, uprooted trees, and downed power lines around 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 01.

The tornadoes were part of a line of thunderstorms that hit various areas of the central US from Friday to Saturday. One person was killed in Missouri in the line of storm, and at least 20 people were injured due to the tornadoes.

Tornadoes were also reported in Arkansas and Oklahoma, according to AP.

The National Weather Service sent crews the following day to survey the hardest-hit areas, including Taylorville, a city 25 miles southeast of Springfield, according to the Springfield Journal-Register.

On the night after the storms, Assistant Fire Chief Andy Goodall told reporters that at least 100 homes had major damage, including his own.

According to a Taylorville Memorial Hospital spokesman, 21 people between the age 9 to 97, went to the hospital for treatment on Saturday. Most were discharged within hours.

Officials offered advice to residents on Sunday morning, such as information regarding shelter for displaced residents, and asking residents to not drive around so that emergency services can do their work more efficiently.

According to the National Weather Service, the tornado season in much of the Midwest is April and June.
