Residents in the town of Oroville are preparing for the worst as thousands of people were evacuated as a damaged spillway on a huge dam threatened to fail.
“It’s weird, almost like the calm before the storm,” said Cynthia Rule who lives above the dam, and presumably out of harm’s way.
She was not one of the nearly 200,000 people who were told to leave their homes on Sunday.
On Monday, the county sheriff said repairs may need to be made before residents are allowed to go home.
Water levels at the huge dam are continuing to drop and stopping water from spilling over the emergency spillway.
The nearby Feather River which runs from the dam through the town of Oroville was higher than usual as water rushed away.
