The United States is sending 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. President Joe Biden said that they are not an offensive threat to Russia. Russia responded by saying that it’s impossible to justify such a step using arguments about “defensive weapons” and that this would be another blatant provocation. NTD spoke to Grant Newsham, a retired U.S. Marine colonel and a former U.S. diplomat, who said that the tanks will help Ukraine defend itself and that they are “not a huge offensive threat to anybody just yet.” Newsham said that the resolve of the United States “has surprised a lot of people not least in the West, particularly the Europeans … [who are] deciding that maybe Russia is a threat.”
