Auguste Rodin’s marble sculpture “Andromeda” is for sale
The family of Chilean diplomat Carlos Lynch de Morla has owned the work since 1888. Rodin sculpted the piece in 1887, then traded it for a bust of his wife the diplomat had commissioned.
The family has finally decided to sell the piece through French art auction house Artcurial.
The sculpture features a young woman, Andromeda, curled up on a rock.
According to legend, she was sacrificed to a sea monster. The statue shows her hopelessly waiting for her fate to unfold.
Though made of marble, the girl’s limbs look soft and supple. Her posture is so natural, one could almost expect to see her move.
Artcurial expects the piece to sell for over a million dollars.
