Samsung unveils flagship smartphone Galaxy S8

Samsung Electronics unveiled its Galaxy S8 flagship smartphone at a media event in New York on March 29.

The long-awaited S8 boasts some discerning new features that Samsung hopes will help it regain leadership in the smartphone market.

Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy said, “The top three things about the Galaxy S8 is, first of all, the infinity display, kind of edge to edge, almost no bezel at all. And the second might be this feature which turns the phone into a PC. And, probably, the third, which interestingly enough, didn’t get talked about a lot is gigabit speed wireless LTE. That’s three times faster than any phone out there today.”

Two models are offered—the Galaxy S8 with a 6.2-inch screen and the Galaxy S8 Plus with a 5.8-inch screen, offering Samsung’s largest wrap-around screens to date.

The screens are similar in width to their predecessors, but are slightly longer.

The S8 features a new artificial intelligence service, Bixby, offering voice-command functions similar to Apple’s Siri.

Samsung also released a new iteration of its Gear VR headset, now phone-powered, and Gear 360 camera.

The Galaxy S8 will go on sale April 21.
