A California public official accused of wire fraud appeared in federal court for the first time. He is one of several individuals in a string of related FBI arrests.

Harlan Kelly, General Manager of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, appeared in federal court in San Francisco on Tuesday.

Kelly was charged with one count of wire fraud, with penalties of up to 20 years in prison or a $250,000 fine. Kelly’s father posted $200,000 and agreed to be his surety.

The FBI reportedly found a substance like cocaine in Kelly’s home.

The judge said Kelly will not have any contact provisions with others alleged in the city’s corruption.

Walter Wong, a contractor, allegedly received millions of dollars in preferential contracts and was arrested in June.

Mohammed Nuru, former Director of Public Works, was arrested in January after allegedly being involved with a series of corruption scandals.

Sandra Zuniga, Nuru’s longtime girlfriend and former city employee, allegedly helped Nuru launder money.

Kelly’s next meeting will be on Feb. 2, 2021, for a preliminary arraignment hearing.
